Re: [MW:24541] PWHT of branch connections.//B31.3

Dear Sir,

My doubt is, the width of the  band (HB or GCB) along the length of main pipe is on the logic of diminishing temperature and its metallurgical effects. Why not it is not considered to do the pwht of the branch in the vicinity area of branch/RF pad only by the same logic of HB and GCB near the weld area of RF pad/branch.( This will reduce the consumption of power, coiling time etc.)

As per ASME B31.3, for branch connections, PWHT is to be done for the entire circumference of main pipe. Is there any exceptions/code interpretations for that, in Carbon steel material or Alloy steel material (SA335 Gr P9,95)?

For example: A 3/4" branch is done on the main pipe of 60" dia. As per the code requirement, the entire 60" dia is to be wrapped with coil and PWHT is to be done.

Piping systems involved for the flow lines and gathering lines from the well head isolation valve to the production facility or processing plant isolation valve are determined as OFF PLOT. ON PLOT defines piping system in the processing plant and production platform. ANSI/ASME B31.4 applies for off plot piping system. B31.4 allows the use of either API 1104 or ASME section IX (as appropriate). However, occasionally, a very small system such as piping within 500 feet of a processing plant (some client also said 400 feet) may be declared B31.3 rather than B31.4. When B31.3 is invoked, only ASME Section IX is used. before you decide which code to use for welding procedure and/or welder qualification for pipe welding, you have to know the design and construction code applicable to the system.
