Re: [MW:24491] Dissimilar welding

First determine whether PWHT is necessary and the service temperature.

In that case please follow Mr.KG pandithan advise because  due to differential thermal expansion  between CS & SS will crack

Else you can use E309MoL to complete the joint

for 50mm CS, preheat and PWHT is required.  If u do PWHT, E309L is not suitable. U have to choose ENiCrFe3/2 and butter on CS, PWHT and carry out with ENiCrFe2/3, or   directly weld with ENiCrFe2/3 and do PWHT, since ASS is 316L, u may not face problem for sensitisation.

I assume that ASMEVIII-1 us applicable.
In that case you have to preheat and PWHT for A516‎ only. So the best practice is to butter tha 516 with 309-L up to a distance of 50mm from the bevel edge, then PWHT

Dear Expert,

Recently we qualify new PQR with following variables:
Material: A516 Gr 70N to A204 TP316L [P1G2 - P8G1]
Thickness: 50mm
Joint: butt joint
Consumable: SMAW, E309L-16, 3.2mm
F No: 5, A no: 8

I did preheat before welding for both material, correct me I'm wrong.

Preheat & PWHT required for dissimilar welding?
Crack recognized immediately after welding, so I assume its hot crack.
Is it related to thermal expansion of CS which cause hot crack?

Kindly advise me how to overcome this defect?
