Yes it is acceptable.The verifying documents will be the Material Specifications for the grades which are named and the Material Test Reports (including but not limited to chemistry, mechanical properties and heat treatment condition) for the steel which is supplied. There is some overlap between different material grades.Some Customer specifications allow for a 'superior' grade to be substituted without notification for an 'inferior' grade. For example in pipe; ASTM SA333-6 to be substituted for ASTM SA106-B. In this example, the SA333-6 is superior and the SA106-B is inferior. Another case is substitution of forged items for cast items. Always check your Customer Specifications for restrictions which may supersede Code. Usually the Owner has requirements regarding substitution and dual-grading.Regards,Darcy Morin
