Th BW and BE are not same, it is possible to have Butt weld but the ending maybe Beveled End BE or maybe Plained End, PE
 
Normally in piping below 2" welding joints is Socket weld, with PE
 
and above 2" welding joints is Butt Weld with BE, anyhow this may change for each piping class, for confimation please check with your project piping class.

The difference I would surmise is that PE & BE are BW, PE could be a BW, which is termed as square butt weld. BE would mean that the ends are either singe VEE butt weld, U butt weld, Double Vee Butt weld etc...
