Just 309 is ok. 316 with carbon steel will give hot cracks because of low FN. You need a filler metal with much higher Cr and Ni content to avoid low FN

Subject: [MW:13062] Welding of AISI 316L to A516 Gr B regarding
Good day to all,
Please refer the attachment for joint configuration, I have to qualify the procedure for AISI 316L to A516 Gr B steel
Thickness of the job maximum 64 mm. I proposed to use 35 mm thickness plate for qualification.Code requirement ASME Sec IX
My plan as follows
1) Buttering the Bevel area of A516 Gr B material using E 309 consumables up to 3 to 5 mm
2) Machining of Bevel & PT (NDT) & Fit up
3) Welding of A516 Gr B to to AISI 316L using E316 consumables
Kindly advice me what preheat temperature & Interpass temperature can maintained during welding, Any PWHT required or not,any other precautionary measures during welding & mechanical testing.
