Re: [MW:15168] RE: 15142] Problem about Positive material Identification(PMI)

I request all our group members not to mention any consumable manufacturer's trade name in their queries.
This forum has to be STRICTLY used for exchange of technical information related to Welding, materials & NDT and not make a mockery of any company or do sales publicity across the globe for others. It takes years of hard work to earn reputation in the market and few seconds to lose the same. We are not here to cause harm to the reputation of any local Indian company and publicise international brands.

I hope you guys will cooperate and make the best use of this forum in a professional manner.

Dear Mr.Jubair,

I feel you have got 5Cr 1Mo wire from the supplier whereas they have produced 9Cr1Mo V  TC. it is not possible that the filler material chemistry and weld metal chemistry can change like this.

You have no other option but to cut and re-weld.  I would suggest that ban the supplier and be vigilant while procuring the consumables.

When you have trusted suppliers for this P91 alloy with long term reputation are in the market there is no need for you to venture with D&H. As such P91 is a critical alloy to deal with ( a lot of attention is required at every stage right from selection of consumables till proper PWHT) and the application is also critical any negligence on this could be disastrous.

You clearly have the wrong filler metal – you are out of spec for Cr, V, and Nb.  This filler metal will have far lower creep strength than the proper 91 chemistry filler metal.  You need to remove any weld found with this type chemistry and re-weld with proper filler metal.  If this filler metal is mismarked, you need to eliminate the supplier from your approved list.  This is a major problem and could have disastrous consequences if it makes it out into the field.

Dear all,

In our  boiler one major problem occurred in Positive Material Identification(PMI) test [Spectrum test].

Around 800 joints welded in the above approved procedure only. Filler wire, header stub, RHFO coil, weld metal undergone PMI test separately and all show positive material results as T91 except weld metal. Weld metal shows the Chromium content only  as (4-7%){Reqd is 8-10.5%}.  We can't find how it happened? Our Chinese consultant told to cut and reweld all the joints. But our contractor argued that we followed approved procedure and used approved vendor's consumable only. Please give a solution. Here I have attached one preheating cum PWHT chart of RHFO joints(for 11 joints,5 thermocouples,1 recorder). All 800 joints are not checked yet. Only 40 joints checked and all 40 weld metals shown low Cr Content.

Please go through the below readings of one RHFO joint.

Heat tint (temper) colours on stainless steel surfaces heated in air // Heat tint

Introduction The colour formed when stainless steel is heated, either in a furnace application or in the heat affected zone of welds, is dependent on several factors that are related to the oxidation resistance of the steel. The heat tint or temper colour formed is caused by the progressive thickening of the surface oxide layer and so, as temperature is increased, the colours change.   Oxidation resistance of stainless steels However, there are several factors that affect the degree of colour change and so there is no a single table of colour and temperature that represents all cases. The colours formed can only be used as an indication of the temperature to which the steel has been heated. Factors affecting the heat tint colours formed Steel composition The chromium content is the most important single factor affecting oxidation resistance. The higher the chromium, the more heat resistant the steel and so the development of the heat tint colou...

Re: [MW:10788] ON PLOT PIPING & OFF PLOT PIPING

Piping systems involved for the flow lines and gathering lines from the well head isolation valve to the production facility or processing plant isolation valve are determined as OFF PLOT. ON PLOT defines piping system in the processing plant and production platform. ANSI/ASME B31.4 applies for off plot piping system. B31.4 allows the use of either API 1104 or ASME section IX (as appropriate). However, occasionally, a very small system such as piping within 500 feet of a processing plant (some client also said 400 feet) may be declared B31.3 rather than B31.4. When B31.3 is invoked, only ASME Section IX is used. before you decide which code to use for welding procedure and/or welder qualification for pipe welding, you have to know the design and construction code applicable to the system. Please read far enough into scope and diagram illustrating the application of either B31.3 and B31.4 hope this helps rgds 2011/4/21 pradip kumar sil < pradipsil@gmail.com > Dear all, ...
