Re: [MW:15114] Root Gap & Root Face in Pipe Fit Up inspection

one thing is you could read through the QC Manual of the manufacturer. Different manufacturer have different fit up configuration.

Dear Experts,

Subject Material: CS/MS Pipes (Dia 2" To 10" x 8 to 10 mm thk) Fit up inspections (As Per ASME B 31.1),

In general WPS root gap is shown as 2 to 3 mm, but practically I have seen that root gap exceeds up to 5 mm in actual fit ups and still proper & full penetration weld is achieved with this much of root gap.

Also welder argues that the root gap is required up to 4 to 5 mm to minimize the contraction of joint after welding.

The same case is with root face that  in WPS root face is shown as around 1.6 mm, but practically I have seen that root face of 0.5 mm only or without root face in actual fit ups and still proper & full penetration weld is achieved.

Although the root gap & root face is a non essential variable as per section IX, but still can we reject the pipe fit ups of root gap of 5 mm & nil root face ?

Can anyone provide some good article / reading material regarding recommendations for pipe fit ups with type of joints & dimensions ?

I need your valuable replies.............
