Hi

Pl refer Table QW- 253 & QW- 353 in ASME Sec IX sub clause QW-402.4 in both table

Deletion of backing is NOT essential for WPS

Deletion of backing is Essential for WQT

SMAW welder used TIG welding as backing, he can not weld  directly on root i.e. without backing. ( deletion of backing is essential variable for WQT as per above table )

you can write in WPS with or without backing qualified , but not in WQT ( who has only SMAW qualification)

Thanks and Regards

Dear Experts,

Please clarify,

we have a WPS & WQT for Combined welding process (TIG + SMAW)

Details:

Weld root pass: TIG welding

Weld Fillup: SMAW

can we use SMAW for Root pass instead of TIG process????
