Re: [MW:28035] ASME SEC-2 PART A CLARIFICATION

Hi,

For example, for Plate 10mm thk,

If C % is more than 0.21, then only u have to worry.

In your case, 0.18 % C, this does not mean you can directly consider Gr.55 without considering other property requirements like impact, tensile, yield and elongation.

Code provides maximum limit for C for particular grade and thickness, which have more metallurgical consequence effect if more than specified Max.limit

1.    Weldability

2.    Mechanical properties

3.    Grain size ( austenitic ) etc.

Check iron – iron carbon diagram for the effect for C %

Also

Your designer will select the material to meet his design / service requirement, like tensile, yield impact, creep etc. Check your material selection philosophy documents if any available.

Change in material always require client approval with proper justification even though cost effective.

Simply you cannot consider as Gr.55 without considering above other factors.

Thanks and Regards

Dear Experts.

As per ASME CODE SECTION 2 PART A  SA 516 Gr 70 material chemical composition, carbon minimum value does not shown.
Due to our project,   SA 516 Gr 70 material chemical composition of carbon value is 0.18.so i will consider as a Grade 55?

please explain the above query. Thanks in advance.
