Re: [MW:28092] Thickness of weld metal qualified on two or more pipe as per ASME Sec ix for welders table QW-452.1 (b)

Hi

From the attached WPQ record, it clearly indicates,

Test A was welded with 2"NPS x 5.54 Thk & Test B was welded with 4"NPS x 13.49 Thk.

Test A was welded with GTAW 2mm & 3.54mm SMAW , So his qualification is GTAW up to 4 mm & SMAW up to 7.08 mm, and Dia qualified 25mm & Over – Example WELDER X

Test B was welded with GTAW 2mm & 11.49mm SMAW , So his qualification is GTAW up to 4 mm & SMAW up to 22.98mm, Dia qualified 73mm & Over - Example WELDER Y

So,

GTAW 2mm only deposited in either case and  its qualified up to 4 mm only, Not 8 mm.!

SMAW 11.49mm only deposited and  its qualified up to 22.98 mm only, Not unlimited.!

QW-452.1 (b) Note (2) shall be used when the diameter restriction along with thickness limitation comes in pics.

Example, In your case Test B i.e. WELDER Y cannot weld 25mm Dia pipe.

Thanks and Regards

Greetings,
Dear professionals,
Need your opinions and experience on below case.
Welders qualification as per ASME sec. ix for thickness qualification, can we use different thickness pipes as per Table QW-452.1 (b) Note (2) Two or more pipe test coupons with different weld metal thickness may be used to determine the weld metal thickness qualified and that thickness may be applied to production welds to the smallest diameter for which the welder is qualified in accordance with Table QW-452.3
One welder with below thickness qualifications.
Test A:
GTAW 4mm  &  SMAW 7.08mm qualified.
Test B:
GTAW 4mm  & SMAW 22.98 mm qualified.
His qualification for GTAW 8mm? and SMAW Unlimited as per above note 2?
