Re: [MW:21984] Lack of fusion in production welding - GMAW !!!

Shielding gas and inductance are most important factors without disregarding all others that Goswami metioned in his email.

Note that due to sluggish nature of ss weld pool due to increased Ni and Cr contents in general implies lower weld pool fluidity and higher susceptibility for LOF than c-steel welding for example. Hence, check if these two (inductance and shielding gas with 2%o2 or Co2, more preferably a He gas mix giving hotter arc and correct weld bead profile) are correctly being applied before investigating other factors.

Hi Vadivel,

What're the  welding parameters (including shielding gas) being used??. What's the welding position? Are the welders' qualified for all position welding?

There're many  subtle variables for GMAW, which play important roles between, procedure qualification and production welds.

Please read this attachment to understand the basic. GMAW-S could be often problematic, especially for positional welding and the shielding gases involved. GMAW-P could be a better option in many instances. Modern machines have features like STT or Miller -RMD, which offers much better control. It's worth looking at , if you have such machines at your works.

GMAW is an excellent process, but takes time to produce results, which temps the fabricators to switch to FCAW. However it's not worth giving up at all.

Thanks.

Hello Mr. George,
My LOF is intermittent in majority of the jobs. However in fewer bodies it is continous. I can say 85:15 ratio of the Leaked welds

Dear Experts,

I face Lack of fusion problem in GMAW process in the production weld often.
WPS qualified on short circuiting mode as the torch is designed to the same.
But when I use the same current and voltage I come across Lack of fusion
The wire I use is ER316L of 1.2mm dia.Bare wire , volt not more than 19V.

Now I started using 23 to 26V(Spray transfer mode volt range) to overcome my issue.
Can you suggest what are the parameters I need to control to get a sound weld in the short circuiting mode.
