RE: [MW:21914] Filler wire for C12A with WC9

Hi,Vadivel Mahadevan,
 
The selection of welding consumable may correspond either to Grade 91 steel or Grade 22 steel (depending on the application, component being welded).DMW's involving Grade91 steel are always tricky as chances of failures are always there.
 
Many welding engineers  prefer stronger welds for DMW's involved in supercritical power plants.The rationale " failure of welds" are more common than BMs". Hence  grade 91  consumable is often recommended say for High Temperature Piping, Super heater tubes where DMW's are involved between grade-91 and grade 22 steel.
 
Consumables matching grade 22 steel are generally recommended with good degree of conservatism (as described in the attachment). However chances failures is service for  grade 22 welds are always there if the design temperature is  above 500 Deg C.
 
If required alteration of welding technique(e.g buttering grade-91 with grade 22 electrode+PWHT ) followed by full welding +another PWHT would be better recommendation.

         YES, Weld of  ER90S-B3+E9018-B3  temperature around 720-730°C (1330-1345°F), for 2 hours,  this temp is
sufficient to temper the P91 HAZ without over-tempering the P22,
