[MW:5261] RE: 5248] RE: 5244] WPS thickness limits with PWHT

To summarize the thickness requirements of Section IX:

For ferrous materials and assuming impact qualification is not required, if the PWHT is sub-critical (i.e. below the lower transformation temperature), then the qualified thickness will be governed simply by QW-451.1.

For ferrous materials, if impacts are involved and the PWHT is sub-critical, then the minimum thickness limitations of QW-403.6 apply.

For ferrous materials if PWHT is above the upper critical temperature (i.e. normalized or annealed), the maximum qualified thickness for the base metal is limited by QW-407.4 to 1.1 times the thickness of the procedure qualification test coupon. The minimum thickness, with or without impact testing being required, is governed by QW-451.1. Note that when PWHT is above the critical temperature, the WPS is exempt from the minimum thickness limitations of QW-403.6 per this paragraph.

Also note that a NEW PQR would be required with ANY of the following conditions:
Without PWHT
Subcritical PWHT
Normalized
Normalized and tempered
Quenched
Quenched and tempered
Annealed
Hope this helps.

John Henning

The Thickness restriction will be relaxed as per QW 403.6 when PWHT is more than upper transition temp. when impact is the requirement. When Impact is requiremnt the with out PWHT qualificaiton reange is T to 2T where with PWHT above Transisiton temparature it will be 1/2 t to 2T.

regarding your query, Yes max thickness qualified is restricted to 1.1T where PWHT exceeding upper transformation temp for ferrous metals, except P7,8 and 45, refer QW 407.4

Dear all
Is there any limitation of thickness criteria as per Sec. IX whether WPS qualified in PWHT or Normalizing /Annealing.

Thank you with best regards!

I think UHA-33 require RT examination after PWHT. No other ASME paragraphs specify the RT after PWHT.

ASME SEC. VIII DIV. 1 does not ask for RT of weld joints after PWHT. Please check your customer specification which may require the joints to be radographed after PWHT.

Dear friends
We just finished PWHT in an LPG sphere acording to ASME VIII section I, and I can´t find in the code the part that obligues to Xray after this treatment, any one has experience with this? where does ASME VIII say it has to be done?
Thank you
