[MW:5237] Re: Welder Qualification using BS 287-1

Dear Mr. Nishad,

First of all there is no specification BS 287-1 or BS 15609 / BS
15614. These are all European Standards EN 287-1 / EN 15609 and EN
15614.
Every country within Europe can except them as a national standard, if
so this specification becomes some additional letters in front of the
original standard.
For the United Kingdom for example this becomes BS-EN 287-1 but the
same specification in Germany is called DIN-EN 287-1.

Regarding your question about how to qualify rectangular and square
hollow section the following: In my opinion you should qualify them as
plate because most of the part to be welded will be like a connection
in plate. If you can turn the pipe you can qualify for position PA
only, if the pipe is fixed you need a qualification for PA / PF or PG
depending which you prefer and PE for welding above the head. If your
customer doesn't specify anything regarding welder qualification you
can choose the shape. You may qualify pipe as well similar to the one
used during WPS qualification in order to arrange your welder
approval.

Of course all the shapes and positions you choose need to be within
the qualification range of the qualified WPS, as well as the limits of
Current and Voltage.
And when you want to qualify 12 mm it isn't approved by a WPS
qualified with material Ø 33.56 x 3.56 mm. For this you will need a
new qualification with a minimum material thickness of 6 mm in order
to qualify up to 12 mm.

Best Regards,

Herman Pieper
