[MW:5268] RE: 5253] Thickness for impact testing

Please note that for LTCS piping, it is mandatory to comply the requirements of Table 323.2.1 (Welding procedure qualification) and Table 323.3.1 (Weld production testing) like pressure vessels as per Sec. VIII Div. 1.

For your case, please refer to Note -2 of Table 323.2.2, which indicates that production weld testing can be preformed as a part of welding procedure qualification, provided it shall meet all the requirements as stated in Table 323.3.1 including thickness limitations i.e. T/2 to T+6mm.

You need to segregate the thickness ranges involved for LTCS piping and accordingly you need to qualify or support the existing PQR to meet the above thickness limitation.

Subject: [MW:5253] Thickness for impact testing

Dear All

My case is

Material- Low carbon steel
Applicable code: ASME B 31.3

According to ASME IX QW-403.6, the minimum base metal thickness qulified is the thickness of test coupon T or 0.625" (5/8"), whichever is less. That is 0.5". Therefore, the thickness range 0.25"-0.5" is not qualified.

But the vendor pointed out the the qualified thickness range can based on fabrication code B31.3 Table 323.3.1 which indicates that qualifed thickness range is T/2 to T+0.25".

In this case, what is the minimum qulified thickness: 0.25" or 0.5"? Please advise.
