Re: [MW:5290] silicon content

Dear Dino,

Could you please specify the particular clause.I found a foot note 'B' in the bottom of the Table 1 chemical composition, regarding addition of five elements. The elements with 'B' mark are Chrome, copper, molybdenum, nickel and vanadium.Unfortunately silicon have no 'B' mark and I think it has no role in the foot note 'B'.

Please advice

Thanks and regards

There is actually a limit, you have to add the five elements (see ASME Sect II for SA106B) and this should not exceed 1%

Dear All,

I just want to join two pipes of ASTM A106 Grade B. As per project
speification CE(Carbon Equivalent) permitted as per IIW formula is
0.43   I found that there is no silicon participation in this
formula. But I have come to know that API RP 577 Clause 10.9.1 using a
formula which includes silicon and rest of the part is equivalent to
IIW formula. If we review the standard for ASTM A 106 Grade B for
chemical properties(Table 1 Chemical requirements);we can observe that
the chemical composition has no restriction for silicon (min 0.10 for
all grades) .ie, there is no maximum limit !!! Can we accept
technically an ASTM A 106 Grade B mill certificate with silicon
content ranging from 0.10  to UNLIMITED ??? If not what would be the
maximum acceptable silicon percentage in A106 Grades ?

Thanks and Regards

Limesh
