RE: [MW:27204] Qualifications of welders

Yes

Final Conclusion in my opinion and based on the interpretation by Mr Jayakumar

Quote"

AS P Number and F number are essential variables for welder qualification and not A number. QW 423 provides exception for P-Number allowing both the ranges and F Number is same for SS & DSS.

AS per ASME Sec.iX it is permissible to use SS welder on DSS. Only thing in Dss welding Oxygen content in the purging gas has to be monitored and the welder educated on the same.

End Quote"

If a welder is qualified using coupon of P1 through P11 (Any material in between) he/she is qualified for welding P1 through P11 (Any material in between);

So he/she is already qualified for essential variable P No

Next is F number,

The F number of the electrodes used for both material is same.

So YES it is acceptable to use the same welder. As far as ASME BPV Section IX is concerned.

Umar

Some care here needs to be applied and please remember to note that this applies only to welder performance qualification.

QW-423.1 refers to unassigned base metals.  In the case of unassigned base metals, generally the welder is only qualified for welding the unassigned base metal.

However,

QW-423.2 allows for base materials produced to other standards that meet the chemical and physical requirements of a P-Number material, to be used as if it were the P-number material for performance qualification.  This is an exception to the general rule stated in QW-423.1 for "unassigned" base metal.

Enjoy

Dear  Jhon Sir

As per QW 423.1 -unassigned material with similar chemical composition also included

in that case no need to go further new performance qualification if unassigned material have similar chemical composition with previous any qualification ,

This is my interpretation, is correct or not please advise.

No welder requalification is not required, provided all other requirements of QW-353 are met, and only Section IX qualification is required..

While Table QW-353 states QW-403.18 is an essential variable one has to look further.  QW-403.18 states:

So one has to look again further at QW-423, Alternate Base Materials for Welder Qualification:  There is no distinction made between P8 and P10H as far base material required is concerned.  In fact the welder could have qualified using P1  base materials for both P8 and P10H base metals.

However, customer requirements may restrict qualification.

Clearly, applying the first instance in QW-423.1, performance qualification with P8 material

A new qualification is required in this case. Qualification on other austenitic stainless steels(P No 8) does not permit the validity of qualification for duplex stainless steels (P No 10H). It's clearly stated under QW-353, please see the extract below.

F No for both ASS and DSS are the same, F5 for SMAW (SFA 5.5) and F6 for GTAW/GMAW(SFA 5.9).

Heat tint (temper) colours on stainless steel surfaces heated in air // Heat tint

Introduction The colour formed when stainless steel is heated, either in a furnace application or in the heat affected zone of welds, is dependent on several factors that are related to the oxidation resistance of the steel. The heat tint or temper colour formed is caused by the progressive thickening of the surface oxide layer and so, as temperature is increased, the colours change.   Oxidation resistance of stainless steels However, there are several factors that affect the degree of colour change and so there is no a single table of colour and temperature that represents all cases. The colours formed can only be used as an indication of the temperature to which the steel has been heated. Factors affecting the heat tint colours formed Steel composition The chromium content is the most important single factor affecting oxidation resistance. The higher the chromium, the more heat resistant the steel and so the development of the heat tint colou...

Re: [MW:10788] ON PLOT PIPING & OFF PLOT PIPING

Piping systems involved for the flow lines and gathering lines from the well head isolation valve to the production facility or processing plant isolation valve are determined as OFF PLOT. ON PLOT defines piping system in the processing plant and production platform. ANSI/ASME B31.4 applies for off plot piping system. B31.4 allows the use of either API 1104 or ASME section IX (as appropriate). However, occasionally, a very small system such as piping within 500 feet of a processing plant (some client also said 400 feet) may be declared B31.3 rather than B31.4. When B31.3 is invoked, only ASME Section IX is used. before you decide which code to use for welding procedure and/or welder qualification for pipe welding, you have to know the design and construction code applicable to the system. Please read far enough into scope and diagram illustrating the application of either B31.3 and B31.4 hope this helps rgds 2011/4/21 pradip kumar sil < pradipsil@gmail.com > Dear all, ...
