In practice, it is very difficult to test that sort of thickness. Most of the shop floor instruments used for UT don't have that sort of power. Also, such thicknesses need very low frequencies (may be 100 - 200 KHz) and those probes are also not easy to get. 

With the normal instruments and probes, I would expect about 30 - 40 inches in carbon steel to be a meaningful range for testing. For stainless steels and castings, it would be still less.
