RE: [MW:18207] RE: 18127] What will be reference WPS no. in PQR( Preliminary WPS or New WPS)

Firstly, a trial or pre-WPS is just that – it is a starting point for developing your actual PQR.  The trial WPS may be based on manufacturer recommendations, some information from other users, or past experience.  During the performance of PQR welding, it is often the case that  optimization will result in parameters that are not necessarily in agreement with the initial “guesses” made at welding parameters.  What, then, is the value of such a document?  Note that your PQR welding is not tied to this document or any other per Code.

Secondly, if the PQR is used to support more than one actual WPS are you going to report each use on the PQR?

The fact is still this is a CHOICE by the originator of the PQR/WPS.  It is NOT a Code requirement, as many on this group seem to think.  There is no basis for demanding this from a fabricator or supplier.

In my opinion this is simply a waste of time, results in excess paper retention, and serves no purpose.  No PQR I have developed over the past 30 years has incorporated this information. To boot, ASME Section IX agrees with this point view based on the interpretation attached by another respondent to this thread.

PS – the only “justice” your PQR needs is acceptable test results.  IF your test results (Code and any additional) are good, your PQR parameters have been justified.

Sir,

In my opinion

The WPS might not be code requirement, but as we mention as "REFERENCE WPS" used in PQR, mentioning ABC-WPS-001, Rev-0 will give justice to the words.

WPS reference is not a Code requirement (neither pre-WPS nor final WPS).  It is strictly optional, if you choose to do it.  If you so choose, it is your option to enter whatever you prefer or your quality system requires.

Dear Friends

Kindly respond to my below query

To qualify a welding procedure we make Preliminary WPS (Suppose no. is ABC-PWPS-001, Rev-0) where we mentioning parameters ranges to be followed to qualify welding procedure (Weld metal thickness for each process, thickness of base metal, , Preheating temp, Inter pass temp, Position, backing etc),

As per procedure we qualify procedure (ABC-PQR-001) in PQR, whereas while final signing of WPS & PQR we make new WPS (ABC-WPS-001, Rev-0) with latest date (date same PQR date) where we show qualified ranges for above parameters…

My Question is;  in PQR, what will be reference WPS no. (Preliminary WPS or New WPS)

Kindly put some light on this, what is the practice being followed in industries.
