Inaddition to what George has highlighted
1. For a dissimilar thickness weld between Base Material 6mm thick to 19 mm thick example like a shell to dished End and a skirt to a shell.

Many advantages like:
1. Partial penetration welds
2. Combination with other processes
3. Welding of small bore piping with GTAW

Thank You For reply
My humble doubt is, 1 ) weld metal deposition is restricted to be max 6 mm for gtaw, and 13 mm for SMAW, what is the advantage of having 19 mm as Qualified base metal thickness. For separate process there is no advantage of Base metal Qualified as per QW-451 ie 1.5 to 2T
AM I RIGHT ???

Backing is a welders qualification essential variable. For PQR it is a nonessential one.The Base metal qualification range is the same for the 3 casesSent from my BlackBerry 10 smartphone.

But for SMAW single process you have to give Metal baking as the GTAW weld Metal act as metal baking.
