RE: [MW:23359] Grade of MATERIAL

Dear Ali

I understand:

·        that you have a welding procedure qualified on X52 and you want to apply it to X60 material,

·        you are working to AWS D1.1 and because they are in separate material groups you cannot do it and be code compliant.

You need to apply to your client for a concession. The grounds for that would be that the material you want to weld is of equivalent weldability to the material qualified in the procedure. You need to look at the chemical analysis and the IIW carbon equivalent and show that they are broadly equivalent.

Good luck with this.

Best wishes

Alan

Dear Alan and Meisam

Thank you for your responses.

In API 5L chemical analysis of X60 and X 52 even X65 are very similar especially in carbon equivalent and because this material want to be used in structure dosen't matter PSL1 or 2.

Original certificate issued for X60.

But i don't understand why standard defines these grades that don't differ much and with regard to in designing step usually you choose higher grade to decrease thickness, but in this case there isn't any benefit.

Additionally in AWsD1.1 X52 in group2 and X60 in group 3 and we have approved wps for group2.

Is it possible that contractor use from API 5L and designate this material to X52?

Regards
