The bends which are made with a pipe bending machine have to be to a much bigger radius of bend compared with an induction bend, which will be, for example 5D. Hence induction bends and site bends are used for very different purposes. If the design calls for an induction bend then that is what is required for geometry reasons. Normally induction bends are supplied with tangential ends and you weld to the tangential end, which is more round than the bent section. If you cut an induction bend you will find that it is more likely to be oval in cross-section. As a result welding fit-up can be bad and weld root defects can result. If good fit-up was achieved and the radiographs show no defects then I consider there is little basis for rejection, even if not exactly conventional.

Subject: [MW:20432] Induction bend cutting during cross-country pipeline construction
Dear Experts,
I am now working on a Ø30" cross-country pipeline project. At my project one AP(Angle Point) needed 12° Bend. so the fitter cut 22.5° induction bend in the middle & make it 11.25° & used it. I think that it is not acceptable. they should use pipe bending machine.
Experts comments needed & also applicable codes & standards regarding field pipe bending.
Regards,
Md. Saidur Rahman
