Re: [MW:19332] Corrosion on Stainless Steel Vessel Weld

Dear Friends,

Thanks for the views.
Would like to share some more info.

We carried out In-situ Metallography and DPT to the stained areas.
Found transverse cracks at stained locations using both the techniques.

The cracks are present on weld and either side of HAZ and are transgranular in nature.
The cracks were observed both on circumferential seam and long seam.
They are branching on either side of HAZ with the portion on weld being a zigzag line.

Prima facie this appears to be a case of environment assisted cracking but still investigating the cause.

Regards,
Eswar Raju.

Mr. Raju,
Probable cause for this corrosion are,

1.the tanks located in a highly corrosive environment containing chlorides,

2. right choice of welding consumable, proper gas shielding and purging, welding technique, acid pickling and cleaning was not followed during manufacturing stages, review inspection reports and confirm OR as per Inspection Test Plan, the manufacturing process were not followed,

3. During Fit Up of of shell courses, different welding consumable (CS filler wire or electrode) might be used for tack weld.

4. very heavy grinding was carried out while fabrication without adequate protection of atmosphere.

With regards

Dear Friends,

On a recent inspection of a Stainless Steel Vessel, there were some corrosive stains observed on near the weld.
Please refer to the pictures attached.
The stains indicate a leakage/flow behavior of the containment.
However, when observed visually there was no leakage of any liquid.

The vessel was in service since 2008.
Material of construction is Stainless Steel SS 316.

What could be the probable cause of this behavior?
Please share your views.

Regards,
Eswar Raju.
