Dear Sir,

I think this is not acceptable as you said that there is no procedure for this type of welding. I think that this may cause corrosion to the material as the material is unknown. May be you have to to check with your vendor and I think stenciling can be done to identify your pipes/components at the site.

In our project, the sub-contractor is using metallic rectangular piece (about 8mm thick, 50X30 mm size) of un-known origin & which  is directly tack-welded (they say tig) near the pipe end(API 5L Gr.B). this is for maintaining the spool traceabilty while sending it to field from shop. but generally  permanent markers are used to write the details on the internals of pipes, but here the sub-con not agreeing for this. most of the projects doesn't allow direct welding on pipes except wear pads supports etc. but those are with approved design & drawing.

here they say it will be removed at the field, but still we worry about the stresses and HAZ.etc...this welding doesnt have procedure as well. please share the valuable views and technical explanations to substantiate our stand (to seek other alternate methods- marker etc). photograph is attached with.
