Please note the following from AWS Welding Handbook, Vol. 4, part 2 page 313:
". . . Duplex filler metal is prefered for welding duplex stainless steels to austenitic stainless steels and to mild or low alloy steel. Duplex fillers are alloyed with nitrogen and help maintain the nitrogen balence in the high temperature heat affected zone. The 309L and 309LMo austenitic stainless steel filler metals are sometimes recommended for dissimilar joining; however, depletion of nitrogen in the HTHAZ and subsequent formation of highly ferritic zones should be considered. . . . "
The concern with duplex is the change in the chemistry and microstructure of the base metal immediately adjacent fusion line. This region can experience the elephantine grain structure associated with straight ferritic steels and the concommittant embrittlement.

Subject: Re: [MW:3848] Welding of Carbon steel to Duplex Stainless Steel
Hi KC,
Most of them get confused in choosing electrode for this combination, and think to go for Duplex filler wire / elecrode.
But ER 309L is richer filler wire than Duplex ER 2209, hence ER 309 should be used.
