FW: [MW:3838] SA387 Gr.11 Cl.2 material welding.


Dear Mr Rao,

 

SA 387 Gr.11 Cl.2 is  P,No 4, Gr-1 material and is supplied in Normalized and Tempered condition. Typical UTS range for this steel is (75 to 100 KSi or  515 to 690 Mpa).  P-4 material is  weldable by 2.25 Cr-1Mo consumable, however one has to take care of the following:-

 

·         The recommended PWHT temperature of two different codes (Sec-VIII,DIV-1 & B-31.1) is shown below for P4 and P5 material. For your scenario, P4 requirement applies to base metal whereas P5 criteria applies to weldmetal.

·         Pr Vessel Code- Sec-VIII, DIV-1 specifies the minimum PWHT temperature, fabricator can select higher PWHT temperature  provided base metal simulation test coupon or PQR indicates that minimum UTS is met.  

·         Piping Code-B-31.1 code gives a range, fabricators are advised to stay within this range.

·         As you can see  from illustrations of B-31.1 the recommended PWHT temperatures  for P4 and P5 base metals are overlapping

 

The recommended  PWHT temperature shall be  1260± 100F, which would equally soften weld and HAZ. There may be queries on over softening of  P4 base metal. As mentioned above if you have base metal simulation test coupon results @ higher PWHT temperature(as above ot close to that) then you're safe.

 

If there are hardness restrictions  on weld and HAZ then it should be taken care off during  procurement of base metals and welding consumables.You need to ensure that required hardness values are met after PWHT.

 

PWHT Temperatures:-

 

ASME –Sec-VIII,DIV-1

 

·         P-No. 4-- 1,2000F (6500C)

·         P-Nos. 5A,--1,250 0F (6750C) ,

 

ASME B-31.1

·         P-No.4-- 1,200 0F (6500 C) -1,300 0F(7000C)

·         P-No-- 5A 1,300 0F(7000C) -1,400 (7600C)

Dear all,

Can any body have experience on welding of SA387 Gr.11 Cl.2 (1 1/4Cr-1/5 Mo)material with E8018-B3L, ER80S-B3L, EB3 type welding consumables(2 1/4 Cr-1Mo).

Higher composition consumables (B3L) are recommended?

Is there any change in PWHT is required as compared to standard PWHT cycle for SA387 Gr.11 Cl.2 material as per ASME Div.1.

Pl. share experience on welding of subject material.
