[MW:3861] RE: 3859] Clarification on range of qualification as per AWS D1.1

1. Nominal thickness shall be as per respective std (e.g ASME B36.10) or the thickness specified on the certificate  (if the certificate states .432" or 10.97, if its nominal thickness is 10.97mm only, and can't be used for TKY qualification), however actual lesser thickness may be allowed depending on tolerance limits (-12.5% in ur case)
My opinion will be min 12mm thickness (as specified on certificate) required for test piece

2. Basemtal qualification refer to Table 4.8 (para 4.21 refer to Para 4.7 and further to this table), separate qualification required for Gr1 to Gr1 and Gr3 to Gr1
Group 1 qualifies only Group 1 to Group 1

Subject: [MW:3859] Clarification on range of qualification as per AWS D1.1

Dear Members,

I have a query related to welder qualification for TKY joints as per Table 4.11 and Fig 4.27 - AWS D1.1

1. Can we use a pipe with thickness less than 12mm or 0.5" during welder qualification. What is the minimum thickness allowed per code.
(Since the specified thickness is nominal, may i use a pipe with thickness less upto 12.5% - Material SA 106 GrB)

2. If welder is qualified in Group 1, can he weld Group 2 & 3 .

Thanks and regards
