Query to use forge component of SS 410S (UNS S41008) OR 405 (UNS S40500) – Ferritic SS (ASME Sec IX P.No.7)
1. As per ASME, there is no forging material standard for SS 410S (UNS S41008) OR 405 (UNS S40500). Please look at below summary.
However, as per UHA-11 GENERAL
(a) All materials subject to stress due to pressure shall conform to one of the specifications given in Section II, and shall be limited to those listed in Table UHA-23 except as otherwise provided in (b) and UG-4.
(b) The specifications listed in Section II, Part D, Subpart 1, Tables 1A and 3 do not use a uniform system for designating the Grade number of materials that have approximately the same range of chemical composition. To provide a uniform system of reference, these tables include a column of UNS (Unified Numbering System) numbers assigned to identify the various alloy compositions.
When these particular UNS numbers were assigned, the familiar AISI type numbers for stainless steels were incorporated into the designation. These type numbers are used in the rules of Part UHA whenever reference is made to materials of approximately the same chemical composition that are furnished under more than one approved specification or in more than one product form.
Query 1: By applying above can we use SA-182 F6a Class 2 (UNS S41000) – Martensitic SS-ASME Sec IX P. No. 6 with following consideration in order to get SS 410S/405 grade of forging material?
· The chemical and mechanical properties of the SA-182 F6a Class 2 (UNS S41000) material will comply to SA-240 Gr. 410S. The heat treatment and requirement of de-oxidation shall also be as per SA-240 Gr. 410S.
· SA-182 F6a will be used for the mechanical testing and SA-240 Grade 410S will be considered for final test results acceptance.
· SA-182/SA-788 will be followed basically for the manufacturing process, tolerance and other similar requirement.
Query 2: ASTM A 473 one of the Forging material standard where SS 410S (UNS S41008) and 405 (UNS S40500) are included.
Can we use above forging product for ASME Sec IV Div I application?
