In rolled steel the grain orientation are parallel to the rolling direction and this help for improved mechanical properties in the rolling direction in contrast to the transverse to rolling direction. A specimen orientation perpendicular to the rolling direction will ensure that material is able to offer the minimum specified properties in the worst scenario. This clause doesn't apply to the casting or forging material.

Considering the XYZ axis of plate where X is the rolling direction or length, Y is the plate width and Z is the thickness. The mechanical properties are degraded in decrements order of X-Y-Z where Z will have the lowest values.

I opened ASME sec 2 part A and sa370 I observed orientation of specimen for testing.i got we have to select orientation of specimen as per code but my question y mostly spec says long axis of specimen should be perpendicular to direction of rolling if we take parrel than what will be effect?
