Re: [MW:29138] RE: 28982] Backing gas as per API RP 582

No purging require while doing SMAW welding for most of materials with few exceptions.
While welding root with SMAW, the process generate enough gases around the weld puddle which is sufficient to protect it from both sides & remember gases have passes to go backside from one side of unwelded area as well as though the molten pools which have high solubility for gas and very fast release during solidification due to high cooling rate.

I Feel Even in Root , if Welding is done with SMAW, Back purging is required, in Covered electrodes slag is formed in the outer surface , it will not protect inside, Since SS is highly volatile and readily absorb atmosphoric gases, back purging is required

Slag is lighter than molten steel. It will come up to the surface. I wonder thait will protect the root. Usually we do 5mm with purging and gas backing using GTAW and then we switch to SMAW

Manoj,

SMAW never requires back purging. It's the "slag" generated by the process, which protects the weld root. This is just back to basic scenario.

Thanks.

Subject: [MW:28982] Backing gas as per API RP 582

Dear Experts,

As per clause 7.3 of API RP 582 Ed. 2016 back purging required for GTAW & GMAW process but no where I could found for other process like SMAW.  Is it mean that if we do welding with SMAW process back purging is not required?

Please share your interpretation.

Thanks and regards

Manoj.
