[MW:29131] Re: TIG welding limitations in Structural

As stated by fellow members, the obvious reason seems to be low productivity with associated higher cost of shielding gas (Pure argon). Although there is no restriction by the code or standards such as AWS D1.1, D1.3 or EN 1090.
E.g. there is possibility to have a thin tubular connection with 1-2 mm but joint according to AWS D1.3 where you have no other choice.
although with bulk of welding joints, hundreds of weld runs require a high weld deposition which is not possible by TIG even it get automated

TIG is beneficial to have lower heat input which is merely a prime consideration for most of structural steels according to AWS D1.1 or other codes/ standards.
Unfortunately, most of people understanding on structural welds is welds with least precautions or lets say they are easy welds. However, in other scenario they are having more critical requirements according to AWS code compare to ASME Section IX in terms of essential variables.
