Re: [MW:4766] PWHT Technician's Training Requirements]

Dear Pradip,

Thank you very much for this detailed explanation. Yes, this would help individual companies to develop their own qualification procedure/guidelines.

Regards,
Subramani.

Subject: [MW:4756] PWHT Technician's Training Requirements]

Hi Forum Members,

I've  come across many companies who perform heat treatments on a regular basis and perform in-house certification of heat treatment technicians. This may incorporate in house theoretical training on various PWHT  followed by field experiences and hand on training.

AWS D-10.10  (Clause 14) Recommended  practices for Local  PWHT  insists that operators should be trained and a proper documentation shall be maintained. Equipments used for local PWHT shall be periodically calibrated, such as thermocouples, strip Chart recorders and the heating devices.

Within  our organization, companies performing PWHT are required to show their competence, as and when required.

The following documents provide useful information on training of heat treatment technicians:-

·          http://www.tradesecrets.gov.ab.ca/occupations/pdf/occupation_exams/209_exams/209_exam_t1.pdf

·         http://www.tradesecrets.gov.ab.ca/occupations/pdf/occupation_competency_profiles/209_competency_profile.pdf

These guidelines specified in these documents may not be mandatory in many places, but training always improves the competence levels and often this may be done in-house.

Thanks

Subramani,

I have dealt with a lot of PWHT guys down the years, there doesn't appear to be any formal system of qualification. The majority of them I

know are however trained electricians and the rest just have on the job training......
