Re: [MW:17803] Polarity difference in WPS

As per AWS D1.1 -2010 edition, Polarity for SMAW process also became Essential variables ( It is not so in the Earlier Edition of D1.1) so new procedure is to be made for change of polarity.

Lalu,

Your statement
"The electrode used was E-7016-1 and as per standard the polarity should be +ve", is, as per which standard?

Anyway, the intention of making a WPS is to get a sound weld and you have achieved it already last year. Now why you want to change it? Let it be as it is. (it is unusual that you have used DCEN for E7016, instead of DCEP or AC, which is usual).

If you change the polarity, then you have to requalify your WPS as per D1.1. Hence, proceed with the production with the existing WPS, if it meets the weld integrity requirements.

SINCE POLARITY FALLS UNDER THE ESSENTIAL VARIABLES CATEGORY IN  AWS D.1.1, YOU 'VE TO REQUALFY WITH A WPS BY SHOWING +VE / -VE.

Yes Polarity is an Essential variable according to AWS D1.1, Table 4.5  Point 13). You need to Qualify a new PQR if you change the polarity.

Dear Experts

In my company we have a wps qualified in last year with AWS D1.1 for structural steel welds. But now the client has raised a problem that in that wps the polarity of the electrodes which is used for the root run is wrong. The electrode used was E-7016-1 and as per standard the polarity should be +ve. But in place of that we used -ve polarity and the PQR is qualified with that.Since I am new to this company I have to solve the issue for submitting the final dossier. So my question is that whether  this WPS can be revised without re-qualification.
