Re: [MW:4781] AWS D1.1

The evaluation of UT results in back up weld area is difficut because of method limits (low accuracy in location of indications, especially at small thickness). UT indications in this area may come from the welding discontinuities (lack of penetration, deep and sharp undercut, lack of fusion, etc..), but, also, from the geometric configuration (excess penetration, etc.).  In these situations it is recommended to complement the UT by RT.

Hi everybody;

According to AWS D1.1 3.13.4 Fİgure 8 in structural steel projects.CJP
is written in that.Is complete penetration required in back up weld
area?.
For example;PQR specimen is welded but according to UT results , there
are defects only in backup weld area.Is it allowable?.
Is backup weld area partial penetration??

Annex K:
BACK UP WELD(Tubular Structures):The initial closing pass in a CJP
groove weld,made from one side only,which serves as a backing for
subsequent welding,but is not considered as a part of the theoretical
weld(Figures 3.8 through 3.10,Details C and D)
