A variety of outside diameter (OD) and inside diameter (ID) machine GTAW-P-AU equipment (Table 2-1) is commercially available from several vendors. Most of the entries in this field are track (OD) or mandrel (ID) mounted as shown in Figures 2-2 and
2-3. Additional variations include tube heads for the smaller diameter welds (Figure
2-4). This sophisticated equipment has gained an excellent reputation in recent years in
both fossil and nuclear pipe repair and replacement areas. Although some utilities own
GTAW versions of this equipment, most rely on the specialized service vendors to
provide the equipment, welding operators, and maintenance technicians during outage
situations. A move has been underway by these vendors to implement machine
GMAW and FCAW, especially in fossil water wall cladding and restoration activities.
The general unavailability of commercially available equipment has retarded imple-
mentation of machine GMAW/FCAW for piping applications (Table 2-2).
An exception to this approach exists for the small diameter tube welding apparatus. Since the cost and operational training for this equipment is relatively low and the success rate is very high, many in-house utility maintenance departments perform small bore piping and instrumentation system repairs with this equipment (Figure 2-4).
A decision to use machine or automatic welding regardless of whether it is ID, OD, or a tube head is also a decision to use precision portable machining for pipe and fitting weld end preparation. In situ welding requires implementation of precision portable machining equipment. The consistent geometries and fit-ups required to achieve suc- cess with automatic or machine techniques cannot be obtained with manual methods such as thermal cutting, gouging or grinding

Hi,
Insitu cladding by machine is very difficult Howover which type of process
and area you want to overlay This is important from method point of view.
