I hope, it is AWS A5.01; not AWS 8501.
As per AWS A5.01 (Filler Metal Procurement Guidelines), there are 'lot classification' which is used for batch testing of consumables as per the said standard viz.,
- C - Covered Electrodes
- T - Tubular Electrodes
- S - Solid wires
- F - Flux for SAW
Class S3 : A Class S3 lot of bare solid electrodes and rods, brazing and braze welding filler metal, and consumable inserts is the quantity of one size produced in one production cycle from one heat.

Dear All, We would like to know what does the S-3 Classification mean as per AWS 8501? We believe it is a nickle base alloy but will appreciate if more light can be thrown on this. Regards, G. A.
