Re: [MW:16309] RE: 16305] Welding for cast iron repair

Mr. Firdaus,

Cast Iron repair could be done in 2 ways.

1. Hot welding.
Preheat the repair area to 400/450 deg.C and maintain  inter pass temp. of min. 300 deg. on an average.
Drill 2 holes on either side of a crack (if any) to arrest their further progression.
    You can use E St (SFA 5.15) / E 7018 / E 8018 G - size 3.20 / 4.00 size after grinding and removing the said defects.
Peen each and every layer of weld after its completion using ball point hammer to avoid stress concentration.
Wrap with dry sand, asbestos cloth to avoid fast cooling rate.
The welds are non machinable. Could be ground to get a finish. good for machinery (lathe, milling etc) beds where
dimensional accuracy  is not  an issue. Process is economical.

2. Cold welding.
Preheat the repair area to 100/150 deg.C  to remove any oil, grease stains.
Drill 2 holes on either side of a crack (if any) to arrest their further  progression.
    You have to  use   E Ni-Cu B -Monel core  with 70 Ni & 30 Cu (or) E Ni-Cl with 98 Ni & 2 Fe (or) E Ni-Fe-Cl with 55 Ni & 45 Fe
size 3.20/4.00 after grinding and removing the defects. DP check if possible.
Peen each  and every layer of weld after its completion using ball point hammer to avoid stress concentration.
The welds are  machinable with carbide tipped tools (or) could be ground to get a finish.
Good for machinery  bases, work out surfaces, correcting machining errors, joining CI to Steel etc. where dimensional accuracy
    is needed. Process is economical.

Sridhar.
