RE: [MW:16303] Pressure Relief Valve Calibration Frequency / Guidelines

I do not think Qatar has specific national regulation on the subject. Usually Qatar operates near to UK regulations.

In most European countries (including UK), todays approach is that the regulations within oil/gas sectors, require a risk based approach and the application of the ALARP principle to decide on the test frequency. From that strategys point of view you will need to consider: The likelihood of that a relief valve fails to open on demand (which very often is dependent on the manufacturer name and the service for the relief valve) + the consequence of a failed relief valve.

The risk based approaches are often based on recommendations given in for example the following recommendations and standards: API RP 576, EEMUA publication 188 (“Guide for establishing operating periods of Safety Valves”).

Reference can also be made to UK HSE report 363/2001: “Best practice for Risk Based inspection as part of a plant integrity management” (available on Internet).

For selection of initial test frequency something with an interval in the range 1 to 2 years would be appropriate, dependent on the possible consequence of a failed relief valve.

Technical Inspection of pressure vessels and its safety accessories pressure safety valves&relief valves must be applied annually. It is specified in various standards and regulations. (TRD, ASME Section I, ASME Section VII, ASME Section VIII, API and National Board inspection code).

Pressure Relief Devices Performance Test Codes specified in ASME PTC 25 Standard.

You can also check online functional tests of safety valves at: www.obef.com.tr

Dear Experts,

We have a Client requirement for safety reason to have PRV (Pressure Relief Valve) in Piping for the Hydro test. The set Pressure is at 110% of Hydro test Pressure.

Piping Standard: ASME B 31.3, Ed'2010.

Query: What should be the frequency to have these calibrated? Please share any reference standard.

We would like to update this requirement in our Equipment Calibration Procedure.

Thanks & Regards

Vino, Doha
