RE: [MW:21653] Filler wire Dia. Vs Base material thickness

Mohd,

All what maters to ASME or other codes is the heat input. If you select 1.6,2.4 or 3.2 mm dia wire but if able to keep the heat input within the reasonable value and prove the mechanical and corrosion properties(as applicable) on the the PQR things should be fine.

In fact 1.6 mm is not the ideal filler dia for root pass welding on 26mm  thk P22 base metal. Too less/insufficient  a weld metal could lead to cracks in the root pass. Hence 2.4 or 3.2 mm would be the preferred size.
Design code can't tailor make everything. Fabricators experience is also recognized by ASME & other codes.

Thanks.

Thanks for your quick response. Client insist to go for 1.6 mm filler Dia for Root Pass welding with GTAW process and rest will SMAW material (26 mm P22 material-Butt Joint).

We have already communicate to client it’s not possible to weld 26 mm butt joint with 1.6 mm and has to go for 2 or 2.4 mm filler dia. Hence I would like to see some more technical comment from experts, Is there is any table to select the filler dia Vs Base material thickness or share your technical input.

Thanks You,

Remember that Codes are not handbooks.
This is a matter of sound engineering.
GTAW is efficient but costly for large thickness

Dear Expert,

Effect on Mechanical properties and weld quality if we use small filler Dia. (GTAW Process-1.6 mm) on high thickness (e.g. 30 mm). If you can provide some code recommendation against the filler dia Vs Base material thickness.

Thanks you,

Mohd. Azam
