RE: [MW:21718] Bend test was broken on A312 TP 321

Hi Nguyen,

The HT performed in the PQR was "Stabilizing Anneal". Typically this HT is recommended for SS 321 or SS 347 in refining environments. Ref NACE SP-170-2012 for details.

For safe PQR qualification with stabilizing anneal:-

  1. the BM shall be stabilization annealed in the milll and the results shall be satisfactory in the CMTR
  2. the similar requirement shall be applicable for welding consumables also
  3. Nb content shall not exceed d 8 X "C" content  or 1.00%  max. Consumable with "C" in excess of this content may result in excess formation of Nb-Carbides(which is quite hard).
  4. This could result in loss of ductility and " Stress Relaxation Cracking during the PWHT.
I would say meeting most or all of the above clauses are essential. Also sharp corners could cause "bend failure". If it's established that sharp corners are the causes/s, then one may have"peace of mind" about metallurgical factors as stated above.

I would suggest if the issue is critical , then send the sample to a metallurgical lab.

Based on the finding of the failure mode(metallurgical or non-metallurgical causes) do the needful.

Thanks.
