Re: [MW:21660] Filler wire Dia. Vs Base material thickness

The right size for heavy thick root pass in TIG process could be 2.00 or 2.4 mm.
Use of 1.60 mm may lead to lack of Penetration and Fusion at over head and
inclined positions due to gravity pull. Along with LP it may also lead to root
concavity /suck back in vertical position also.

Thanks for your quick response. Client insist to go for 1.6 mm filler Dia for Root Pass welding with GTAW process and rest will SMAW material (26 mm P22 material-Butt Joint).

We have already communicate to client it's not possible to weld 26 mm butt joint with 1.6 mm and has to go for 2 or 2.4 mm filler dia. Hence I would like to see some more technical comment from experts, Is there is any table to select the filler dia Vs Base material thickness or share your technical input.

Thanks You,

This is a matter of sound engineering.
GTAW is efficient but costly for large thickness

Dear Expert,

Effect on Mechanical properties and weld quality if we use small filler Dia. (GTAW Process-1.6 mm) on high thickness (e.g. 30 mm). If you can provide some code recommendation against the filler dia Vs Base material thickness.

Thanks you,

Mohd. Azam
