A demonstration plate is required if Standard Welding Procedure Specifications (SWPS) are used in lieu of the usual qualified WPS - i.e. WPS qualified by a PQR. This is discussed in ASME Section IX, Article V. Since there is no PQR, a single test weld must be made using the WPS in accordance with QW-510 and recording the welding information per QW-510(d). QW-510(e) specifies the testing to be performed: " The coupon shall be visually examined in accordancee with QW-302.4 and mechanically tested in accordance with QW-302.1" (bend tests or nick break for fillets) "or radiographically examined in accordance with QW-302.2. If the visual examination, radiographic examination, or any test specimen fails to meet the required acceptance criteria, the test coupon shall be considered as failed and a new test coupon shall be welded before the organization may use the SWPS."
The advantage of the SWPS is avoiding the cost of performing the PQR testing: bends, tensiles, etc and writing a WPS. The disadvantage is that you must comply entirely with the requirements of the SWPS; that is you may not modify the SWPS. The SWPSs are limited in thickness and application. Further, you cannot combine the SWPS with any other WPS. A list of SWPSs permitted for ASME fabrication are found in Section IX, Mandatory Appendix E.
