Subject: [MW:25751] Placement of Insulating Joint in pipeline changing medium from soil to air

 

This is with reference to Insulating Joint being installed on Steel pipelines to isolate the aboveground section from the underground section. I needed to know what is the advisable position for installing the same? Should IJs be installed aboveground or is it OK if the same is buried below ground? Also our current practise is we provide Cathodic protection to the underground portion and the portion above the IJ is ideally protected by painting. In some cases the portion above the buried IJ is also coated till the point it comes aboveground. Please provide me with suggestion / recommendations regarding the same.

 

For some IJs we have started exposing the IJs and keeping it exposed in a chamber & filling it with sand. Is this a viable solution? Please advise
