Or, you can qualify a tack welder with a groove joint in 1G and check the root penetration.

Kindly advice with regards to qualifying tack welders as per AWS D1.1, 

Please let me know about tack welder qualification, its not in ASME, but in AWS it states, whether we can use plate thk of 6mm T joint and weld 50mm length of 6mm size and break the same to check the fusion , is it ok
