Re: [MW:18064] Usage of E7018, E 8018-B2 for root pass welding

Dear Sumod,
Removal of backing is an essentialvariable whereas addition is not.
Root pass with low hydrogen electrode is not as easy as 6010, nevertheless it is done quite often. The welders need to have that skill.

Subject: [MW:18062] Usage of E7018, E 8018-B2 for root pass welding
Sirs,

I have a SMAW- WPS with backing for P1 to P1 & P4 to P4  material. I need to do some welding of plates without backing or back gouging.

a. As backing is not an essential variable, can I revise the WPS to use without backing.
b. If so, is it acceptable to use 7018 for CS roots & 8018-B2 for alloy roots (As per previous WPS with backing) without backing. Client not allowing to use 6010 for roots as it is not basic. My doubt is whether I can get the required root penetration with 7018 & 8018-B2 . Plate to be welded is only 6-12 mm thick.

Please clarify my doubts

Sumod
