[MW:1774] Socket welding gap

We're welding Socket-welding fittings from 3/8 to 2", and we have
trouble with the internal offset requested on ASME B31.3.

Our client hasn't accepted the usual method, which consist in use a
"elastic welding spacer" (US patents related: 4,505,420 or 4,346,918
or Google: gap-a-let).

Is there another method, e.g.: an external device - that can be used
for this welding, ensuring the correct gap [1.6 mm] ?

I know that's a materials related forum, but I'm sure you guys can
help me.

Regards.
Salvador.
