[MW:1775] Re: Socket welding gap

We were using cardboard sheet (circular ) to maintain the gap during Pigtail welding in one of our projects It was mandatory to maintain required Gap of 1.6mm to counter thermal expansion.  The cardboard sheets used to get burned off at high temperatures during pre-commissioning.
This was acceptable to our client but not sure if this will be case with every client.

We're welding Socket-welding fittings from 3/8 to 2", and we have
trouble with the internal offset  requested on ASME B31.3.

Our client hasn't accepted the usual method, which consist in use a
"elastic welding spacer" (US patents related: 4,505,420 or 4,346,918
or Google: gap-a-let).

Is there another method, e.g.: an external device - that can be used
for this welding, ensuring the correct gap [1.6 mm] ?

I know that's a materials related forum, but I'm sure you guys can
help me.
