RE: [MW:23146] J groove bevel end requirement

It is ok. U & J are done by shaper, planner. 'U' could be done by air arc gouging & grinding.
Even it costs addional   for above optarions, it is worth as welding cost is 4 to 5 times more than ur base metal. We say, 'avoiod welding. If not minimise it to redce the distortion & cost of fabrication'
Now, the choice is yours.

Yes I agree with all of you. To reduce heat input,  weld metal and avoid distortion,  J or U groove is preferred.

But, our vendor does not have the facility to do U or J groove.
So, is it acceptable to use V groove above 30mm wall thickness as per international codes.

But again, there are many constraints like approach to the joint, position of welding,
process selection, plate to pipe joint, quality requirements, availability of machining
facilities  etc. which may change above norms. 

Joint design  is not a mandatory requirement as per codes.But, joint design helps us
to control distortion, which varies from 3 to 9 deg. and said to be max. in single 'V' joint
and less in 'J ' groove type.

Double 'V', 'U' & 'J' helps to keep the distortion down to 2 to 3 deg. But again it depends
up on process selected and size of electrode used (SMAW) etc.

You can check any design manual for joint details.

It's not mandatory you can always use V bevel but in order to minimise volume of weld metal deposit ,and therefore the welding time, we prefer to use J bevel for thikness above 19 mm.
