[MW:7161] RE: 7127] Material for Sea water piping for Offshore enveronment. GRP/GRE

If going for GRP or GRE piping, as recommended by many others, the following should be noted:

a) Supporting of GRP/GRE is much more intensive than that of metallic piping - follow design standard (ISO or ASME or NORSOK) and manufacturers recommendations.
b) GRP/GRE piping is much sensitive to pressure surges - i.e. pump start/stop, sudden opening/closing of valves, etc.
c) Establish a programme for NDT of the piping joints.
d) Establish together with pipe system manufacturer (Ameron, Bondstrand or other) detailed jointing procedures. (similar to welding procedures)
e) Establish together with pipe system manufacturer (Ameron, Bondstrand or other) a jointing operator gualification system for those that shall perform the jointing (similar to welder qualification system).
f) During piping fabrication very controlled workshop conditions should be kept - facilities to be approved by the pipe system manufacturer  (controlled humidity, no oil in the air, controlled temperature - all in all very much alike laboratory conditions).
g) Supervisor from the pipe system manufacturer (Ameron, Bondstrand or equal) to be on site during the pipe spool fabrication/joining.

Done the right way a good - but expensive solution - but also with a long life time.

Good quality GRP/GRE manufacturing is difficult and expensive.
But so it is also for gluing parts for aircrafts.

Kristian

Hi All,

Can any one tell me which is the best suitable material for Sea water application in offshore environment.Client specification shows Cu-Ni material,we are facing problem with procurement(Long lead time). So i am planning to replace it by Galvanized Carbon steel,Is it computable for Long term use.If any one have experience please share me.

I know we can use some FRP material, but still i want to go for metallic material. Please share me some of your experiences.....

Regards,
Prakash
