RE: [MW:27654] Pickling and passivation of 17-4Ph Stainless steel

Hrushikesh,

You may explore the possibilities of pickling by "Citric Acid". Search in google , there are some NASA presentation/s on Citric acid pickling and passivation treatment for various stainless , e.g. 304, 17-4ph &  more.

The heading is Citric Acid Passivation  of Stainless Steel.

As this  document is  strictly copyrighted ,I would say circulating them in the forum would not be appropriate, however you may download and read , using the above link.

This grade of  steel have  less corrosion resistance than 300 series, plus hardness is always more. Conventional HNO3 +HF treatment may make them prone to SCC  and other general corrosion related damages making them vulnerable in service.

Hope this would help you.

Thanks.

I don't have the ITP.

Customer says that after heat treatment, scale formations needs to be removed. Pickling passivation if done then wch chemical reagents to be used as for this material issue is that the scales doesn't get removed after pickling passivation.

Dear experts,

My query is:

I have weldments joining SS 304L # 17-4PH material. The weldments are subjected to heat treatment.

My customer is of the view that 17-4PH cannot be subjected to pickling and passivation after heat treatment.

Can anyone provide technical literature as to why SS 17-4PH grade can't be subjected to pickling and passivation?

Thank you.
